It’s that festive time of year when families gather together to celebrate the Holidays and the beginning of a New Year.  This usually means there will be lots of hanging out in the kitchen and living room for entertaining, snacking on Christmas cookies and even trying out that skateboard or bike that someone may get for Christmas.   Your flooring and in particular your hardwood flooring is about to undergo heavy wear and tear. We’ve put together some simple hardwood floor care tips that will help ensure that your hardwood floors not only survive, but will continue to look beautiful throughout the holidays and beyond.

At Martin’s Flooring, we understand that the average homeowner is much busier than usual during this season, especially during the holidays.  That’s why the floor care tips we have developed are simple, not time consuming and mainly preventative, so that your hardwood flooring remains brilliant for years to come.

Here are our simple suggestions to keep your hardwood floor looking new:

  • Clean up spills promptly using a soft cloth and manufacturer-recommended cleaning product.  If you are not sure what products to use, please give us a call at Martin’s Flooring at any of our locations, and our store associates will help guide you.
  • Placing area rugs in heavy traffic areas will help reduce the wear of your hardwood floor.  Strategically placed, inexpensive area rugs are invaluable for protecting your floors.
  • Trim and clean pet’s nails and paws.  Hardwood floors will scratch and dent.  Keeping your pet’s paws trimmed will help.
  • Vacuum your floor once a week using a soft brush or felt head.

Extra foot traffic is not the only thing issue you may have with your hardwood floors during this season.  This is also the time of year that temperatures and humidity levels are changing on a weekly or even daily basis. It is important to realize that hardwood is a natural product containing moisture and will react to environmental changes such as humidity fluctuations. Maintaining humidity levels of 45-55% and room temperatures of 68-72 degrees will help stabilize your flooring’s atmosphere, keeping your floors looking great for many years to come.
