Installation FAQ's

Removing your old carpet

If you already have wall-to-wall carpeting, it will have to be removed before the new carpet can be installed. And if you wish, we'd be happy to provide that service to you at a modest charge. If you'd rather do it yourself, please follow a few simple suggestions. Be sure you open your windows and let fresh air in while the carpet, pad and staples are removed. Also be sure to leave the tack strip down. Finally, vacuum or sweep the sub floor to remove any remaining dust and dirt.

Moving your furniture

The installation will go more smoothly if you remove as much furniture as possible. If you arrange with your salesperson for the installers to move the furniture, please follow these suggestions.

In dining and family rooms
  • Please remove breakable items such as vases, lamps and dishes.
  • Detach wiring for stereos, TVs and other electronic equipment.
  • Remove light furniture such as end tables, coffee tables and dining room chairs.
  • Any breakable items that have to be handled by our installers will be done so at the customer's risk.
In bedrooms
  • Please strip the beds and remove all items from the bottoms of closets (if they are to be carpeted).
In kitchens and utility rooms
  • Please disengage the washer, dryer, refrigerator and all gas appliances.  Our installers are not responsible for disconnecting these items.
In bathrooms
  • If vinyl, laminate, hardwood or tile is to be installed, you can arrange for a plumber to have the toilet removed prior to the installer's arrival, or we can arrange the plumber for an appropriate charge.

Moldings

Typically, base moldings are removed and reinstalled for all hard surface installations, such as vinyl, wood, laminate and ceramic tile.

Be aware that when installing carpet, the installers will be as careful as possible, but depending on the carpet backing, the baseboards may get slightly scratched.

Dust & Dirt

Depending on the type of installation, dust and dirt may be inevitable.

Underlayment installations require sanding and you can expect an appropriate amount of dust to be emitted.

Leftovers

After installation, you may notice some leftover pieces of material.  This is due to the fact that most carpet and vinyl is sold in 12 foot widths.  If your room is narrower or wider than 12 feet, there may be a waste factor of 12-15%.

Binding is available for a modest charge, if you would like the leftovers to be made into small rugs.

Hardwood, laminate and ceramic tile are also sold in full cartons, any leftover goods are useful to keep on hand for any repairs that may be needed down the road.

Carpet Seams

In most installations, carpet seams are inevitable.  Even though our installers do the best they can, they will not be invisible.  This is quite normal and should be expected.  The location of the seams is done in a fashion to minimize their appearance within your budget.

Shedding

Most carpets retain some loose fibers after they leave the factory.  These fibers often appear as balls or fluff on the surface of your carpet or in your vacuum cleaner.  With time, they will work themselves out and go away.

Ventilation

Many materials, including some associated with flooring removal and installation, can have an effect on indoor air quality.

Scheduling Your Installation

Upon receiving a deposit for your order, you will be given an approximate week of installation.

In order to best coordinate the installer and your schedule, please be aware that these dates are subject to change.

Our scheduling department will call you approximately one week before installation to set up the particular day.
