Choosing the right flooring that fits your style, but that also works for your active family, can be challenging.  We’ve been helping Lancaster and Reading families with making the right flooring selections for their homes since 1985.

Walk into any room in your home. What do you see? You probably notice the furniture, the wall color, the window coverings, but what about the floor? Have you considered how important the right choice in flooring is for the overall “feel” of your living spaces?

The Influencers when Choosing the Right Flooring

Flooring is something that we walk on, play on, and even lay on.

What went into your decision to choose the floor coverings in the different areas of your home?

Were you influenced by a special sale, a program on HGTV, the advice of a friend or loved one?

A rooms flooring plays a significant role in how a room “feels.”

Here are some tips to help you in choosing the right flooring.

The Functionality of a Home’s Flooring

First, think of the room’s function. Wall-to-wall carpeting does not work well in a kitchen or bathroom but is still an excellent choice for a family room, living room, and bedrooms. Carpeting still accounts for over 40% of all flooring sold, so regardless of what you might see or hear, it is still very popular with today’s homeowners.

Stylish and functional choices for kitchens and baths are luxury vinyl flooring, ceramic and porcelain tile, and even sheet vinyl. These floors are durable, waterproof, and enhance the décor.

What about basements? If basements are not dry, and even if you’ve never had water damage, it would be safe to stick with one of the waterproof floors above. Another option for basements, if you want to warm it up, is to install removable carpet tiles. These square tiles come in a variety of colors and have the added benefit of being able to change out individual tiles if they get wet.

What kind of mood do you want the room to have? Natural flooring such as hardwoods softens and “warms” a room. Tiling, depending on the colors and the different patterns on the tiles, can help a room look sleek and modern, cute, and charming or even harsh and uninviting. Your choice of flooring goes a long way to enhance — or hurt — the mood you want to set in the room.

How much maintenance and care are you willing to expend on your flooring? Are you willing to spend the time and the money to maintain a hardwood floor?

If not, luxury vinyl planks— one that has the look of wood — may be your best bet. Luxury vinyl is hands down the best choice if you have pets or active young children.
